The contribution analyses the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in non-patent literature searching and assesses both its potential and its methodological limitations. AI is understood as a central technological driver that is leading to a structural shift from classical, predominantly Boolean search strategies towards semantic and context-based approaches. This gives rise to a hybrid search paradigm in which AI technologies and human expertise are combined.
AI can offer efficiency gains particularly in the initial exploration, structuring and analysis of large, heterogeneous data sets. Tools such as SciSpace or Elicit enable semantic search, automated content analysis and the generation of structured summaries. The quality of the results depends significantly on the precision of the research question, targeted and high-quality prompting, and the iterative search process.
At the same time, fundamental limitations remain. The completeness of the results is not guaranteed, the transparency and traceability of the underlying mechanisms are limited, and reproducibility is also restricted. In addition, the automated condensation of content may lead to information loss or distortion.
Against this background, AI should be classified as a supporting tool. A reliable non-patent literature search still requires a systematic, iterative process, critical validation of the results and methodological control by the search professional within a consistently hybrid approach.
