From Filing to Foresight

The New Role of the IP Professional

The role of the IP professional is evolving.

For years, IP management has been defined by execution, filing patents, coordinating translations, and maintaining rights across jurisdictions. But as portfolios grow larger, more global and more complex, this execution-led model is no longer enough.

Today, the decisions made at the point of filing carry far greater weight. With the introduction of the Unitary Patent and increasing pressure on cost, coverage, and risk, a single choice can shape the long-term performance of the entire portfolio.

In this new environment, the role of the IP professional is shifting, from managing tasks to making decisions.

This session explores what that shift means in practice. It will examine how IP teams can move beyond process and towards structured, portfolio-level thinking including how to:

  • Make more informed filing and validation decisions
  • Balance, cost, coverage, and long-term portfolio value
  • Improve consistency across jurisdictions and lifecycle stages
  • Increase visibility into portfolio risk and performance.

As the landscape continues to change, the question is no longer how to execute IP processes- but how to make the right decisions.

The future of IP isn’t execution, It’s foresight
