Massyl Mallem is the Co‑Founder and CEO of PatentPlusAI. An engineer by training, he honed his IP skills on the front lines of corporate IP departments, handling everything from invention disclosure and prosecution to litigation and opposition cases, but always refining his core craft: patent searching. After testing every commercial search tool and working with dozens of search firms, he saw a gap in quality and founded PatentPlusAI to close it. Since 2019, he has been obsessed with training and teaching AI to outperform human searchers, believing machines should handle the heavy prior-art grind while humans concentrate on search strategy and IP decision-making.
Human/Agent Co-Existence: This presentation explores the evolving role of human expertise in an AI-Agent world. The model of Human-Led Automation (HLA) significantly increases the quality of prior art searches while reducing cost by 50% and effort/time by 80%. Unlike traditional AI search software, the presentation introduces an autonomous research system in which AI agents function more like trained employees: they execute the heavy middle layer of search work at scale, while humans direct, manage, and operate the process. Humans should lean into the qualities that make them most valuable (strategy, judgment, and decision making), while allowing AI agents to lean into their machine strengths (speed, scale, persistence, and exhaustive analysis).
